Consulting Network Engineer / Tier 2 IP NOC - systems / networking - operations job employment

Threshold Communications is a growing company based in Seattle WA serving customers throughout the US and all over the world. We are looking to add a team member in the Phoenix Arizona metropolitan area who will work from home full time.

This position has two primary functions:

1. Customer-facing consulting network engineer
2. Core network engineer for our own ISP and data center operations

Job Functions:
• Handle escalations from tier 1 support team about circuit turn-ups, IP assignments, basic router configs
• Competent use of trouble ticketing system
• Capture and document procedures and knowledge in our corporate information tools (wiki, Confluence, Sharepoint, etc)
• Manage routers, switches, and firewalls for a small number of customers in a Managed Service Provider arrangement
• Manage routers, switches, and firewalls also in our own ISP network environment
• Provision and deploy new customers on our own ISP network including adding IP interfaces, new VLANS, assigning IP addresses etc.
• De-provision and clean up our ISP network environment as services are turned down.
• Assist our customers turning up new services with your configuration and troubleshooting expertise.
• Assist customers with their network designs to implement industry best practices and make the best use of the products and services purchased from our company
• Create and keep up-to-date detailed network documentation and diagrams
• Participate in our company's primary customer-service after hours on-call in a regular rotation (currently after-hours on-call duty is approximately one week out of every six)

• 5+ years progressively responsible experience in network architecture and engineering
• 2+ years experience building, scaling, and growing in a ISP/carrier environment
• Network Engineering in a ISP and/or Telecom carrier environment is experience highly desired (i.e. carrier background is more beneficial to us than enterprise experience)
• Strong understanding of TCP/IP, network routing protocols BGP, OSFP for IPv4/IPv6.
• ISP-grade BGP including communities, route maps, local preference, inter-networking BGP with other routing protocols
• Create and manage QoS configurations on switches and routers and be able to troubleshoot QoS problems.
• Strong understanding of carrier ethernet and/or metro Ethernet environments, Familiar with MEF 2.0 terms like UNI, NNI, EVC
• Background in carrier MPLS a plus, in particular IPVPN, VPLS, and Ethernet pseudowire transport configurations
• SD-WAN experience is desirable. Cisco Meraki's auto-VPN and/or Silver Peak Unity experience preferred, other SD-WAN is fine too
• Unix environment command line experience a must
• Competent understanding of general network topics like DNS, reverse DNS, IPAM, SNMP and systems tools frequently used in Networking monitoring and management
• Excellent time management and communications skills, ability to work with remote teams, without day to day supervision
• Proven ability to juggle several projects and keep things moving and customers happy
• Have a friendly, customer-facing attitude. Candidates must be able to attend meetings and conference calls, hold small talk conversations with customers from time to time

• Cisco IOS and Juniper routers, experience with Cisco ASR 9k (IOS-XR) and Juniper MX a plus
• Juniper SRX firewalls including site-to-site VPN and troubleshooting
• Some hands on experience with Cisco Meraki or Silver Peak SD-WAN is desirable
• Amazon Web Services (AWS) experience with networking topics is desirable (e.g. VPC subnets in the AWS cloud and how that pertains to DirectConnect and/or VPN gateway options)
• Hands-on network troubleshooting including layer 2 Ethernet (MAC address tables, VLAN tagging etc) and layer 3 (ARP table, ACLs etc)
• Ability to run packet captures and analyze what you see in Wireshark or other capture tools (tcpdump etc)

Nice to have:
• VoIP experience, particularly carrier SIP trunking and SBC role, packet capture, analyzing SIP call traces
• Experience troubleshooting VoIP / RTP call quality issues over various types of networks
• Familiarity with various network monitoring tools (Solar Winds, Nagios, Zabbix etc)

What this job is not:
• Enterprise IT having anything to do with a sys admin role for a Windows server environment or Active Directory, Exchange server, etc.

This is a full-time work-at-home position so you must have room in your home for an office and place to do your daily work. You must supply and manage your own desk and chair and physical work environment. You should be present and participate in team discussion on IM / Slack during regular business hours.

Although this is a work-at-home position we are looking for candidates with reliable transportation. You'll need to visit our physical data center facilities from time to time and once in a while visit a customer on-site. We are only looking for candidates in Phoenix AZ area at this time.
